Benzocaine Spray

Pronunciation: BEN-zoe-kane
Generic Name: Benzocaine

Benzocaine Spray is used for:

Temporarily relieving pain and itching caused by insect bites, minor cuts and burns, poison ivy, and other skin conditions. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Benzocaine Spray is a topical anesthetic. It works by numbing the skin.

Do NOT use Benzocaine Spray if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Benzocaine Spray or to another local anesthetic (eg, lidocaine)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Benzocaine Spray:

Some medical conditions may interact with Benzocaine Spray. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding


• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement


• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances


• if you have diabetes, peripheral vascular problems, skin irritation, severe burns, or deep puncture wounds

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Benzocaine Spray. Because little, if any, of Benzocaine Spray is absorbed into the blood, the risk of it interacting with another medicine is low.

Ask your health care provider if Benzocaine Spray may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Benzocaine Spray:

Use Benzocaine Spray as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Benzocaine Spray is for external use only. Do not get Benzocaine Spray in your eyes, nose, or mouth, or around the rectal or vaginal area. If you get Benzocaine Spray in your eyes, rinse immediately with cool tap water.


• Wash your hands before and after using Benzocaine Spray, unless your hands are part of the treated area.


• Wash and completely dry the affected area.


• Apply a thin film of medicine over the affected area. Rub in gently if desired.


• If you miss a dose of Benzocaine Spray and you are using it regularly, use it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Benzocaine Spray.

Important safety information:

• Do not use Benzocaine Spray on severe burns or deep puncture wounds.


• If your symptoms do not get better within 7 days or if they get worse, check with your doctor.


• Do NOT use more than the recommended dose or use for longer than 7 days without checking with your doctor.


• Benzocaine Spray is extremely flammable. Do not store or use near an open flame or while smoking.


• Use of Benzocaine Spray is not recommended in CHILDREN younger than 2 years of age without first checking with the child's doctor; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.


• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Benzocaine Spray while you are pregnant. It is not known if Benzocaine Spray is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Benzocaine Spray, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Benzocaine Spray:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Mild stinging or tingling when the medicine is first applied.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); skin bleeding, irritation, pain, redness, or swelling.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center ( http://www.aapcc.org), or emergency room immediately. Benzocaine Spray may be harmful if swallowed.

Proper storage of Benzocaine Spray:

Store Benzocaine Spray at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Do not freeze. Avoid temperatures above 120 degrees F (49 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Benzocaine Spray out of the reach of children and away from pets.
